GoldenEye Bugs
1. The Paintbrush Glitch
Load up Dam and play as normal up to the first tower. Before picking up the Sniper Rifle switch to Unarmed. As soon as you pick it up press A three times as quickly as you can. If you did it correctly you will now be holding a "paintbrush." What you're actually seeing is Bond's arm in the wrong orientation. If you switch to another weapon then back to Unarmed the bug will fix itself.
2. Lousy Gas Containment
Play Facility and make your way to that out-of-the-way room with the scientists and gas barrels. Place a Remote Mine on some barrels. Leave the room and go back to the hallway. Let the doors close. Detonate the mine. Even though the game says "Gas leak detected - isolating area." the gas has no trouble escaping! The entire level fills with toxic gas and you will pass away if you don't finish the mission very quickly.
3. Wrong Weapon Model
Start any multiplayer game using the Remote Mines or Timed Mines weapon sets. The AR33 pickups will use the KF7 model on the ground. When you pick them up they'll still act like normal AR33s.
4. Softlock: Livin' on the Edge
Turn on Tiny Bond and play Cradle. Make your way to the small platform at the very bottom. Crouch and move off the edge. If you run you may just fall off to your death like normal. If you move more slowly, you will become stuck. You cannot move, look around, pause, or do anything at all. Eventually the Janus Special Forces will come down there and kill you. But with invincibility turned on you will survive forever and there will be no choice but to do a hard reset.
5. Floating Bullet Holes
When you shoot the large windows you escape out of in Archives it creates both a glass bullet hole and a default bullet hole. The real problem though is that once the windows are shot out the default holes stay and additional ones can be made by shooting where the windows used to be. You can also stick mines here, bounce grenades off, etc..
This happens because there is a wall on the other side. The exterior section can be seen in the outro, or you can use the no level endings GameShark code to explore it for yourself.
6. Floating Padlock
7. Braking Reloads
You cannot reload while looking at any of Train's Brake Units, or even significantly above or below them. Once the brake unit is destroyed this inability to reload is resolved.
8. Frozen Moonrakers
When you defeat Jaws in Aztec three infinitely spawning Moonraker Elites will begin to chase you. Occasionally one of them will just freeze in place. I do not know why this happens, but it happens on both emulator and original hardware.
Sometimes after being wounded they will go back to normal, but I've also experienced cases where they freeze again after being wounded.
9. Floating Projectiles
This is probably the most infamous bug in GoldenEye. Load up either Bunker level with All Guns and Infinite Ammo turned on. In the main room place a Remote Mine on each of the overhead monitors then detonate the mines. Now all weapons that launch projectiles will leave their projectiles floating mid-air. This includes Throwing Knives, the Grenade Launcher, the Rocket Launcher, Grenades, Remote Mines, Timed Mines, Proximity Mines, and Tank shells.
This glitch also adds a weapon called Null to your inventory. It uses the Rocket ammo icon, but the weapon has no effect. Null is a programming term used to indicate the intentional absence of any valid value or object reference.
10. Invalid Texture
This bug exists at all times, but the previous glitch makes it much easier to see. The back of the Rocket projectile has an invalid texture ID. Because of this it gets rendered as some other texture loaded in memory. In this video one of the Rockets starts using the blue beam texture when the Watch Laser is fired.
11. Unarmed Guard
Play Dam with All Guns and Infinite Ammo turned on. Allow the truck to get to its final point. Toss a couple Throwing Knives and Remote Mines. Select the Covert Modem and start tossing them until the game won't let you throw any more. Activate the alarm by the Russian Commandant's building. One of the guards who spawns into the level will have no gun.
GoldenEye guards have no melee attack so this poor guard can do nothing but run around.
12. Playing with Portals
GoldenEye uses a portal system to determine which rooms should or should not render. Portals are invisible planes placed between rooms. They can also be tied to doors so that when a door is shut the room behind it does not render. This portal system has limits and can be overloaded. The easiest way to do it is on Aztec. Open both the first door and the door to the black room with all the screens, then walk backwards into the black room. The room will fail to load in.
It can also be done the other way around so that the starting room does not load. Once either door closes the game fixes itself.
The developers were aware of portal issues as seen in this bug report video where the bow of Frigate unloads. Locking the doors to the bridge wings were probably part of the fix for this issue. If the GoldenEye Setup Editor is used to unlock them, open them, and open some other doors, Frigate's portal system becomes overloaded.
13. Floating Mines
Mines placed on standard glass in single player will correctly fall if the glass is shot out. However, in multiplayer the mines float in mid-air. Aside from that their functionality is not impaired.
Another case where mines don't fall is when they are placed on the windows of doors with glass.
14. Minnie Driver
When using the Tiny Bond cheat it is possible to crouch beneath Dam's truck and see inside the cab. Curiously, one can see the cab's doors are fully modeled.
15. Safe Space
If you park the Tank on a slope such as at the end of Runway you can crouch and get inside the Tank. When you're inside guards cannot see you. If you're in the hull you cannot shoot out of it, but if you crouch beneath it you can shoot guards while they cannot see you. Drone guns can still see and hit you though.
16. Involuntary Tankers
If the Tank is parked over the preset where some of Runway's respawn guards originate, they will get stuck in the Tank. This trick can also be performed on Streets.
17. Involuntary Truckers
On Dam allow the truck to get stopped at the first security gate while you continue to the first alarm. Press the alarm. Usually two guards would come running from the security gates but in this case they won't. That's because they're stuck inside the truck. Here the "Walk Through Doors" hack is turned on so that we can go through the security gate and see the stuck guards.
18. Missing Weapons
When using any of the 2x weapons cheats they will not show up in the Pause Menu, though you can still switch to them by cycling weapons in regular gameplay.
19. Caught in the Act
GoldenEye is usually pretty good about hiding it when guards spawn into a level, but one place you can catch it happening is if you destroy the dish console in Surface 1 then step outside.
20. Four Faced Freaks
In Surface 1 it is possible for the game to run out of texture memory. When this happens the game reuses the last loaded texture instead of loading in new textures. A possible result of this is that the Arctic Commandos who spawn in response to triggering the alarm on the helipad door may appear to have four faces!
I don't have 100% surefire steps to cause this glitch, but the idea is you want to use up as much texture memory as possible. Toss Throwing Knives, Proximity Mines, and Remote Mines. You may have to return to the helipad door and set off the alarm multiple times to see this glitch.
