Weapons

GoldenEye 007 features an astonishing 32 weapons (if you're willing to count Unarmed and the Detonator as weapons). These weapons are generally inspired by real world weapons, but also include weapons from the Bond universe such as the Golden Gun and original designs that are only loosely based on real armaments.

This page lists the weapons in the order they appear in the Pause Menu. Special thanks to the Internet Movie Firearms Database and its contributors which I used as a source for some information. Also thanks to Subdrag and other contributors of the GoldenEye Setup Editor. I used it to find the exact data for weapon statistics.

Explanation of Terms

  • All hitscan weapons have a baseline for the amount of damage they do. How that damage is applied depends on where the object or character is hit. See this page for an explanation of how damage is applied to characters.

  • The Penetration value refers to how many objects it takes to stop a bullet. Objects include things like characters, doors, and crates, but not most walls. A value of 1 means the bullet stops at the first object. A value of 2 means the bullet damages the first object it hits then passes through and has the ability to damage another object behind it. A value of 3 means it hits and damages 2 objects then stops at the third object, etc...

  • I believe Rate of Fire is the number of frames between shots when holding down Z. Thus the lower the value, the faster the weapon fires. TODO: verify this.

  • Inaccuracy is the spread of fired shots. Zero is perfectly accurate. The higher the value, the higher the spread.

  • Loudness (Min/Max) has nothing to do with volume of the sound effect. This value tells the game how much noise firing the weapon makes to guards. I believe that the min value is the noise made when fired once, while the max value is the noise made after the weapon is fired a certain number of times in a row. TODO: look into the game's code and find the formula for this.

Unarmed in first person view
Bond performing his famous slap attack to knock out a guard from behind in one hit.

This is the only weapon the player is "armed" with no matter what. Most enemies can be knocked out in one hit if they are unalerted and struck from behind. Unarmed is often popularly refered to as Slappers because the multiplayer weapon set with no weapons is called "Slappers Only!".

There are two variants of the attack - one animation slaps from the left and the other slaps from the right. The animation is selected purely at random.

Unarmed is unique among GoldenEye weapons in that it has an alternate form. If the player has a Sniper Rifle the hand will be replaced with the butt of the sniper rifle.

Unarmed has no entry in the game's instruction booklet. According to developer David Doak Unarmed was not added until late in development.

Fighting Knife
Description
A lethal knife designed for vicious close-quarters fighting.

A more powerful melee weapon than your bare hand, the Hunting Knife is unfortunately only available via the 2x Hunting Knife or the All Guns cheats. Similar to the Slappers, the Hunting Knife will randomly slice from the left or the right.

Despite the gut-wrenching sound they make, Hunting Knives do not create blood on characters. Perhaps Rare or Nintendo thought that would be too gory.

It's interesting that the instruction booklet calls this weapon a Fighting Knife. As far as I'm aware this is the only official reference to it by that name.

The ultimate silent weapon. Commando standard equipment on covert missions.

The Throwing Knife is tricky to use, but with practice it can become an effective close to short-medium range weapon. One advantage of Throwing Knives is that they can be picked up and reused as long as they don't land in an inaccessible location.

You can press and hold Z to draw back the knife. This will allow you to throw the knife quickly when you release.

Description
A small, easily concealed automatic pistol, which can be fitted with a silencer. 007's weapon of choice.

Based on Bond's iconic weapon of choice, the Walther PPK, the PP7 is commonly issued as the starting weapon in the later levels of GoldenEye. Its excellent accuracy makes up for the small magazine size. Good players can reliably take down enemies with PP7 headshots.

Only two NPCs use the PP7 in all of GoldenEye. One is the Russian Commandant in Bunker 1. The other is Boris in Control, but Boris fumbles his.

The game's internal name for the PP7 is "ppk".

The Silenced PP7 does the same amount of damage as the regular PP7. Despite the name, it actually does make noise when fired quickly, and rapid shots can alert enemies.

The DD44 is the favored sidearm of most of GoldenEye 007's enemies. Despite its bulky size, booming sound, and Description it actually does no more damage than the PP7. It's still incredibly fun to dual wield on Archives.

The DD44 is generally considered to be based on the Tokarev TT-33, because "tt33" is the game's internal name for the weapon. There is an argument to be made that the game's actual model is based on a Hungarian-made TT-33 variant called the Tokagypt 58.

Spyder
Description
A modern variant of a Czech automatic pistol. Small, but capable of automatic fire.

Loud, weak, and inaccurate, the Klobb is often considered the worst weapon in GoldenEye 007, although one could argue that distinction belongs to the Shotgun. This is what developer Martin Hollis said about the gun's name:

"...the Klobb was named after Ken Lobb, who was our Nintendo-side producer and contact...I do slightly regret naming such a poor weapon after him, since I am tremendously fond of the man...It’s a little unfair that we named such a useless weapon after him. And for that I am sorry."

— Martin Hollis, GoldenEye 007 Project Lead (Source)

Don't feel too bad for Mr. Lobb, as he's apparently happy to have a weapon named after him.

The Klobb's design is based on the Škorpion vz. 61, a Czechoslovak machine pistol. The stock is somewhat unique for folding over top of the gun, and in game the stock is always in the folded position. Reviews I've seen of the real world Škorpion actually rate it very favorably.

The game's internal name for the Klobb is "skorpion".

Name
KF7 Soviet
Description
The standard issue rifle to Soviet troops. Tough and capable, with a long range.

The KF7 Soviet is the bread and butter of GoldenEye 007 firearms. This ubiquitous rifle is found in the majority of levels. It's not terribly accurate when hip fired, but can make decent shots when zoomed in and fired singly.

The KF7 can be burst fired by tapping the Z button once when unzoomed. It becomes automatic when Z is held down, but the number of rounds expended is always a multiple of 3. When zoomed it's possible to fire single shots or full automatic.

The game model is based on the Chinese Type 56-1 which has a fully hooded front sight. GoldenEye's variant has no stock and a muzzle brake somewhere between that of a Type 56 and an AK-74. The weapon is called "ak47" internally. Unlike most of GoldenEye's gun models, the KF7 actually has a trigger.

GoldenEye 007 players have long argued over whether the KF7 looks more like a black pencil or a Duracell™ battery.

This is such a cool looking gun it's a bit of shame we only see it on Frigate. It does more damage than most guns, but is tempered by less than stellar accuracy. It has the second largest magazine in the game with 50 rounds.

The Phantom is based on a somewhat obscure Italian submachine gun called the Spectre M4. The GoldenEye version appears without a stock.

For some reason the Phantom uses the same firing sound as the KF7.

My personal favorite. This is the first weapon in the list with penetrating power. It has a very helpful zoom and a highly distinctive star-shaped muzzle flash. Game artist Adrian Smith used the movie Heat as reference for the game's muzzle flashes. (Source)

The AR33 operates similarly to the KF7. A quick Z press while unzoomed fires a three round burst. Holding Z makes the rifle fully automatic.

Description
A phenomenally powerful sub-machine gun with a near-bottomless magazine.

Truly the ultimate weapon in 007 GoldenEye. High rate of fire combined with extreme damage and penetration make the RC-P90 perfect for mowing down guards in single player or opponents in multiplayer.

The RC-P90 is based on the FN P90. The real world weapon has a magazine capacity of 50, but GoldenEye extends this to an insane 80. Curiously, parts of the model are colored red.

The RC-P90 is rare in single player. Xenia carries one along with a Grenade Launcher in Jungle. A couple guards towards the end of Caverns have them, as well as some of the infinite respawn guards that get activated when you enter the auto turret tunnel. There is also a RC-P90 hidden in a crate on Train when playing on Agent difficulty.

Shotgun in first person view

One could argue this is the real worst weapon in 007 GoldenEye. Although every shot fires 5 pellets, each pellet does a meager 0.4 damage and the pellets have a terribly inaccurate spread. The Shotgun is also one of the loudest weapons in the game.

The Shotgun's similarities in name, model, and function to the Automatic Shotgun has caused a fair amount of confusion for GoldenEye players over the years. One might even find it a bit odd this weapon was included at all.

The Automatic Shotgun is a substantial improvement over the Shotgun — doing 50% more damage per pellet and sporting a tighter spread. It has some superficial resemblance to the Franchi SPAS-12 though personally I don't think it strongly resembles any real world shotgun.

A neat feature that applies to both shotguns is the cartridge holder will update to show the appropriate number of reserve shells after a reload. It's really cool the developers took the time to program such a detail.

Strangely, neither the Shotgun nor Automatic Shotgun have an entry in the instruction booklet.

The Sniper Rifle has the strongest zoom in the game and it's the only weapon with a variable zoom. Unlike most weapons, the Sniper Rifle has no Auto-Aim.

Due to and being used for adjusting zoom, you cannot do crouch while holding the Sniper Rifle. If you want to crouch with the Sniper Rifle you must switch to another weapon, crouch, and then switch back to the Sniper Rifle.

The Sniper Rifle is an original design that isn't really based off any real world weapon. The scope does look somewhat similar to the one used on Bond's Walther WA 2000 in The Living Daylights.

The Cougar Magnum (or CMag for short) is only carried by Natalya in Jungle and Control. If Natalya dies the Cougar Magnum is not dropped and it disappears along with her body.

The design comes from the movie The Man with the Golden Gun starring Roger Moore and released in 1974. It's assembled from a fountain pen, a cigarette lighter, a cigarette case, and a cufflink. (Source)

The yellow text on the side of the launcher reads "картофель включен", a Russian phrase that translates to "potates included". It's pretty funny that we're calling the powerful Rocket Launcher a spud gun!

Pull out the pin, count and throw. Simple. The fuse is 5 seconds, so a count of 2 or 3 is safe.

The trusty grenade is a pretty fun weapon. The fuse timer starts as soon as you press and hold Z, so as the manual advises, do be sure to release it before it explodes. GoldenEye 007 must have been one of the first FPS games to let players cook grenades. Let me know if you can think of any FPS games released before GoldenEye 007 that had this mechanic.

The game does not show Bond holding the grenade in his hand. Released grenades simply appear from the right side of the screen.

A Grenade in a characters's hand can be shot and exploded while they hold it. Grenades can also be shot and exploded while in mid-air.

There are at least some guards who will pull grenades on every level except for Dam and Train. Train makes sense because guards would be just as likely to hurt themselves as Bond on that tight map. Dam may be because the developers didn't want to "throw" too much at the player on their first level.

The Grenade's design is based on the American Mk 2 hand grenade.

The Timed Mine is similar to the Grenade, but tends to stick to surfaces rather than bounce. Guards never use the Timed Mine or any other mines.

Name
Proximity Mines
Description
Motion-sensing limpet mines. Fire, but DON'T forget, as they can't tell the difference between friend and foe.

Of course this mine is most useful for eliminating characters, but the manual really isn't kidding when it calls them motion-sensing. Other mines, grenades, rockets, Grenade Launcher rounds, and even Throwing Knives will all set off Proximity Mines.

Proximity mines will also detonate when shot — useful for clearing them if a multiplayer opponent has put them in your path.

Name
Remote Mines
Description
A versatile device. Clings to most surfaces and can be set off by remote control.

This explosive mine variant is exploded via a Detonator. After throwing one or more mines press A to switch to the Detonator. The Detonator has unlimited range and is activated by pressing Z. Mines can even be stacked on top of each other, although the game does have limits on how many explosions can be made at once.

There is a shortcut for detonating Remote Mines. After tossing a Remote Mine press A + B at the same time.

Bond's handy watch can send detonation radio signals to Remote Mines. Arguably more of a gadget than a weapon, but the game's code treats it like a weapon so we'll include it here. The Detonator is automatically equiped after you expend your last Remote Mine. Simply press Z to detonate all Remote Mines currently placed in the level.

This is a weird one. The Taser is a Game Boy-inspired weapon that can only be obtained with the All Guns cheat. The menu spells "Taser" with a 's' while the label on the model spells it with a 'z'.

It has an embedded screen which plays an animated image of the Bond silhouette. Every Z press fires a single shot that does 1.0 damage and the Taser must be raised again before another shot can be fired. Unlike a real Taser, this one has unlimited range and energy.

There's an unused animation (see below) of a guard getting shocked. This would have paired great with the Taser. It feels like the developers had bigger plans for this weapon, but probably never got around to them because of time constraints.

The game's instruction booklet makes no mention of the Taser.

The tank is not just a fearsome weapon, but GoldenEye 007's only drivable vehicle. It can be found to the side of the Facility building in Runway and near the beginning of Streets. In both cases the Tank will carry 30 shells with no way to pick up more.

No ignition key is necessaary to use the Tank. Simply climb up near the hatch and press B to enter. Press B again to exit. You can still switch to your regular guns while driving the Tank.

The tank's cannon is not its only means of eliminating enemies. You can also crush enemies by driving over them. This is not a weapon for the squeamish!

The tank's model is based on the Soviet T-55 with some ERA blocks added to make it look more modern.

The game's instruction booklet makes no mention of the Tank.
