Controls
GoldenEye 007 offers an impressive eight control schemes, each named after a different Bond girl. Four of them use one controller and the other four use two controllers. The control schemes that use one controller are often referred to as "1.X" style while the ones which use two controllers are named "2.X".
At the time of development the Nintendo 64 controller and its analog stick were novelties and there wasn't much precedent for first person shooter games on the Nintendo 64. Developer Dr. David Doak explained the design decisions behind GoldenEye's control schemes in this interview with Ryan White a.k.a. Goose. GoldenEye was designed so that the game could be largely completed on Agent difficulty using only the analog stick and the Z button. The 2.X styles were added late in development with the developers fully aware that two analog sticks were needed to cover the two axes of looking and the two axes of movement desired in first person shooters.
