Mission 1: Arkangelsk
Part i: Dam
Mission 1: Arkangelsk
Part i: Dam
MI6 has confirmed the existence of a secret chemical warfare facility at the Byelomorye dam, USSR. Its heavily guarded location and workings are a cause for major concern. Nerve gas produced there has been turning up in the hands of hostile regimes around the world and deals with international terrorists have been rumored. This facility should be destroyed with extreme prejudice.
The area around the dam is well defended against full scale military attack but a lone agent stands a much better chance. The easiest way to gain entrance to the weapons factory will be to get down the face of the dam. Q had an idea about that.
Information concerning shipping and contacts is stored on a computer system in a secret ops room within the dam. With this covert modem connected to their satellite link we can intercept the data when a backup is carried out. As for getting down the dam, use the bungee rope. At the bottom of the jump, use the piton gun. Simple.
Hardly a lover's leap, James. Be careful though, I hate to think of you falling for anyone else.
Dam is the first level of GoldenEye 007. No tutorials. No training missions. You're thrown right into the action. The level consists of three large areas bounded by cliffs, a vehicle tunnel, the top of the dam, the tunnels below the dam, and docks behind the dam. Soviet military presence is high. Interspersed in these areas you'll find six guard towers, each with a patrolling guard. There's even a pillbox that houses two guards, making them difficult to hit.
The basic premise of this level is that Bond needs to reach a platform at the top of the dam so that he can bungee jump to the chemical warfare facility located at the base of the dam.The level takes place in the Arkhangelsk Oblast, northern Russia. The cliffs are snowy and the level has a generally cold and gray feel. The design of the dam itself is based on Contra Dam in Switzerland, formerly called Verzasca Dam. That's where the movie's bungee jump scene was filmed. Unlike the real dam, this one has three guard towers on top — a feature planned even in the Design Document. It also has docks behind it which the real dam does not.
The intro text says this level takes place "nine years ago." If we go by the film's release date in 1995 that would place the mission in 1986.
Starting view of Dam. A green GAZ-66 truck automatically makes its way over a bridge and towards the tunnel at the rear of this area. The truck does not react to you in any way other than to stop if you move in front of it.
If you turn around, you will find a large locked door behind you, so the only way to proceed is forward.
Turning around the corner you encounter the first guard in the game.
▶ TIP: If you peek around the corner slowly and stand in the right place, it is possible to headshot this guard without him being able to see you.
Past the first guard two bridges lead over a chasm. The chasm continues a bit past the top of the screenshot, but there's nothing of interest down it.
This is the first guard tower and the archetype for the two to follow it. There are both interior and exterior staircases.
View of the tower's interior. One guard patrols the tower on a continuous loop.
▶ TIP: A Sniper Rifle is available for the taking on the upper level. This comes in handy for picking off the two guards in the tunnel. Due to the way guard vision works in GoldenEye they are unable to see you while there is a railing between them and you.
▶ TIP: If you shoot a tunnel guard while the truck moves between them, the other guard won't notice his buddy being eliminated.
View of the vehicle tunnel. The game makes good use of textures with lighting baked into them here.
A look at the second large open area. There are five enemies here with two located in a pillbox. Be wary of a guard lurking behind the metal crates on the left.
▶ TIP: All the wooden crates in this area drop KF7 Soviets when destroyed.
These two guards can be difficult to eliminate thanks to their cover. You can take advantage of the fact that they will never leave their pillbox. The GoldenEye engine wasn't really made for situations like this and the developers had to make some hacky structures to get this pillbox to work. If you stand in certain spots in front of the pillbox the guards cannot see you. On console it's even possible to warp through the slit by switching weapons while strafe running into it.
The truck will stop at these double gates until you allow it through by pressing B on the lit panel.
When you enter the third large area the Russian Soldier on the left will always run for an alarm unless you wound him.
Closer look at the car port and the cinder block building which contains a Russian Soldier and a Russian Commandant.
The front of the building has alarm 1 of 4 that needs to be destroyed. This can be done with five PP7 shots.
View of the building's interior and the Russian Commandant. It is not necessary to confront the enemies in the building. You can bypass them if you are quiet.
▶ TIP:If you want, you can actually snipe both enemies through the windows. The Russian Commandant requires a very precise angle for this and two headshots, but it is possible.
Behind the Commandant's building you will find the uplink terminal where you need to plant the Covert Modem. Once the modem is installed you will complete Objective B.
Looking down from the screenshot above you will find a grate with a view into the secret ops room below.
▶ TIP: If you are willing to wait a bit, you can pick off a patrolling guard when he passes beneath the grate.
Just before the dam itself a padlocked gate impedes your progress. Simply shoot it once to destroy it. The padlock cannot be destroyed using Unarmed. In theory you could softlock yourself by expending all the ammunition in the level up to this point without destroying the padlock.
View of the dam's top. The scale of this area is truly impressive for a Nintendo 64 game.
Three guard towers line the top of the dam. Just inside the first tower you will find alarm 2 of 4. I recommend eliminating the guard that patrols on top quietly so you do not attract attention from the guards in the tunnels below.
At the center of the dam four steps lead up to the bungee jump platform. Make sure not to step off the platform until all objectives are complete.
Off to the right of the previous screenshot is a view of the center guard tower, the reservoir, and the docks.
Inside the center tower is alarm alarm 3 of 4.
A look at the dam's back from the docks. The bollards here are not solid to the player, you can walk over them. And unlike most crates in the level the ones back here do not drop KF7 Soviets.
Interior view of the center guard tower and the gate to the tunnels.
Underneath the dam is a long series of tunnels. The central drain and the green slime on the walls really give this area a feeling of dampness. The sheer length of the tunnels, the number of guards standing in them, and the crates that sometimes give them cover make this the hardest portion of the level.
View of the security door at one end of the tunnels.
This is the secret ops room, as Q calls it in the briefing. I really like the design here with the slanted glass partitions. The mainframes for completing Objective C are at the back of the room. Two of the guards in this room will send out clones if they hear noise so use the Silenced PP7 or Sniper Rifle in this area.
These are the mainframes that store shipping and contact information for the chemical weapon transactions. After the Covert Modem is correctly installed you can press B to initiate the data backup. The backup takes ten seconds. Once it's finished you will complete Objective C.
View from the other end of the tunnels.
Above the previous screenshot is the final guard tower and also alarm 4 of 4 that needs to be destroyed. Once all four alarms are destroyed Objective A is complete.
View from the bungee jump platform. Simply step off it to complete Objective D.
