Mission 9: el-Saghira
Part i: Egyptian Temple
Scaramanga has passed into legend as the deadliest assassin of all time. The current whereabouts of his golden gun are unknown...
This is sinister, 007. We've received a message from someone claiming to be Baron Samedi, the voodoo sorcerer you crossed swords with back in Haiti. He claims to have the golden gun and wants to meet you in the ancient el-Saghira temple in the Valley of the Kings. Obviously, it's a trap, but as a double-0 agent you know that goes with the territory.
Keep your wits about you, 007. Remember, the golden gun is a powerful weapon, perhaps it could even defeat Samedi.
Do you do voodoo, James?
Egyptian is the 20th level of GoldenEye 007 and the only level of the ninth mission. It is one of GoldenEye's two bonus levels and is based on three different Bond movies starring Roger Moore: Live and Let Die (1973), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). Egyptian is unlocked by completing the main campaign on 00 Agent difficulty.
The level is located at a fictional ancient Egyptian temple complex called el-Saghira in the Valley of the Kings. Egyptian's design was influenced by scenes from The Spy Who Loved Me. wLarge pillars dominate many rooms while small passages lead off to obscure but important chambers. The level has a number of hidden sliding doors that are barely distinguishable thanks to having slightly different fog characteristics than most surfaces.
Egyptian is unique among GoldenEye levels for its supernatural themes. The level's boss is Baron Samedi, an antagonist from Live and Let Die who has the power to resurrect. First he wields dual DD44s, but after dying he returns with DD44s that fire like ZMGs. On his second resurrection his DD44s fire like Lasers. Even after being vanquished for a third time he returns in the outro to mock Bond. Samedi even has the power to control the weather — after his second "death" he changes the level's fog from a sky blue color to an ominous black. It's no wonder that "Defeat Baron Samedi?" is the only objective in the game to come with a question mark.
Egyptian is the only level to feature the Golden Gun, a single shot weapon that does 100 damage. It is possible to kill Baron Samedi with standard weapons, but the Golden Gun is far more efficient. The Golden Gun is located in a room guarded by automated guns. The only way to obtain it is to navigate the tiles of that room in a specific way. See farther down the page for a map on how to do that.
When you enter the Golden Gun room follow this precise tile pattern. Failure to do so will trigger the four Drone Guns to open fire on you! If this does happen you can still exit, go around, and try again.
This armor is in the small corridor that leads out of the Golden Gun room. You can grab this one regardless of whether or not you successfully navigate the Golden Gun room.
Egyptian begins in this room with a reflecting pool. There are two Russian Infantry at the far end of the room armed with dual ZMGs.
A look down into the reflecting pool.
If you're just looking to beat the level as quickly as possible run straight ahead from start. For this tour we'll veer to the left and over to this room with four guards.
This long hall has guards lurking in the recesses.
The alcove to the left of the previous screenshot has an Armor Vest at the back.
Baron Samedi is in the large room to the left, but first we'll go forward and retrieve the Golden Gun.
This room is fairly large, but it is so crowded with pillars that it feels cramped.
This passage leads to the Golden Gun room. There is another passage that is very easy to miss on the right.
This is the intimidating booby trapped Golden Gun room. The stone encasements hide four Drone Guns ready to devour you if you step on the wrong tile. Use the Golden Gun Room Map to navigate this trap safely.
The glass case protecting the Golden Gun lowers.
Collect the Golden Gun and Golden Gun Bullets to complete Objective A.
The exit from the Golden Gun room takes you to this ledge where you can overlook Baron Samedi's room. Watch out for guards positioned at both the bottom left and bottom right.
And here is Baron Samedi who mocks us with his sinister laugh. Take him out with your Golden Gun.
Baron Samedi resurrects at the reflecting pool near where you started the level. After he is eliminated the fog turns to black and the stage feels decidedly spookier.
Earlier it was mentioned that there was an easy to miss passage on the way to the Golden Gun room. We're going to take that to get to the final Baron Samedi.
The passage leads to this lower level with a shallow pool of water.
Go up two sets of stairs and you will find this area with an enormous shiny obelisk and the third Baron Samedi. Kill him to complete Objective B and end the level.
There is an alternate route to get to the third Baron Samedi. You can go back to where the first one was positioned and look for the hidden door. It appears as a slightly darker section of wall.
There are three Drone Guns in rising shafts on the right. If you run down this corridor at full speed they will not hit you. Go to the left at the end to find the third Baron Samedi.
You can climb up these shafts if you want, although there isn't really a reason to in single player.
At the top there is another hidden door. Again, not really useful in single player but still good to know about.
One more look at that shiny obelisk.
