Mission 7: Cuba
Part i: Jungle
Satellite reconnaissance has been unable to locate any installation near the coordinates recovered from the Janus computers in St. Petersburg. It seems likely that a ground search will be necessary. The CIA has provided you with a light aircraft. Underfly Janus radar and parachute in to the drop, proceed through the jungle eliminating any opposition and attempt to locate the Janus base.
Miss Simonova will be with you on this mission. If Janus is operating a Goldeneye satellite, her computing skills will be essential when you try to disable their systems. Jack Wade has given her some basic firearms training and he thinks she'll be able to carry her weight in a combat situation. Be careful though, 007, remember she isn't an experienced operative like yourself.
You'll know you're on the right trail if you encounter Janus troops or automated defenses. Be especially wary of their robotic drone guns. I'm giving you some triggered mines for their ammo dump, try not to waste them on silly things. Oh, and look out for that Xenia woman, 007, I think she's after you. You lucky devil.
A hot date in the rainforest? With two women! Shame on you James.
Jungle is the fifteenth level of GoldenEye 007 and the first level of the seventh mission. It takes place in the Cuban jungle near Janus' secret base hidden beneath an artificial lake. Bond and Natalya search for the Janus Base by air when a Janus missile shoots down their plane. The pair survive the crash, but find themselves outnumbered and outgunned by hostile Janus forces stationed in the jungle.
Jungle is the only level where Bond has an armed ally throughout the mission. Natalya carries a Cougar Magnum and is actually pretty good with it. She is still vulnerable to explosions and guards will occasionally target her if they don't see Bond, so care must be taken to protect her.
The level is about two thirds open area with tropical trees, ferns, and other plants, and one third cave. The open area is pretty linear with some clearings for Drone Guns. There is also a rope bridge towards the end of that section and one unmanned guard tower. The cave section twists upon itself and makes for close quarters intense combat.
From the start go straight to the first drone gun. Behind and to the left of that gun, near the corner in the tree wall, you will find this armor.
Approaching the second drone gun head-on, this armor is behind it and bit to the right. This is one of three armors in the game that loads on all difficulties except 007 Mode.
Bond and Natalya start next to the wreckage of their crashed plane. Straight ahead are legions of Jungle Commandos guarding the Janus base with their AR33s.
It doesn't take long to come across the first soldiers. The fog in this level is so dense that sometimes you will notice your weapon auto-aiming towards enemies before you even see them.
A look up at the tropical canopy.
Creep forward slowly and a Drone Gun will eventually emerge from the mist.
▶ TIP:There is a sweet spot where you can barely make out the gun, but you are still outside the gun's range. The AR33's zoom really helps here and you can safely snipe Drone Gun 1 of 7.
You can find Armor Vests behind the Drone Gun clearings.
Continuing through the jungle. If you get overwhelmed you can retreat and let Natalya take care of some of the Jungle Commandos with her Cougar Magnum.
Carefully approach and eliminate Drone Gun 2 of 7.
Onward to the next Drone Gun.
Another squad of Jungle Commandos has been dispatched and Drone Gun 3 of 7 is just barely visible through the fog.
There is a watch tower just beyond the third Drone Gun, but no one inside it.
You get bit of peace through the next stretch of Jungle, but don't get complacent. There's a boss battle coming up.
Xenia awaits beyond this rickety rope bridge. She is by far the hardest boss in the game so far.
After you cross the bridge Xenia will say this line then come charging at you with her RC-P90 and Grenade Launcher.
▶ TIP: You can use the tree to the left for cover. Xenia cannot see over the protrusions at the base, but you can. You can also opt to retreat behind the bridge and unload on her as she crosses it. Natalya can be genuinely helpful as well.
Once Xenia bites the dust that's Objective B completed.
Drone Gun 4 of 7 is sneakily hidden to the left of the bridge. Do not let it catch you by surprise.
▶ TIP: If you want to save ammo, you can use one of your Remote Mines to destroy the gun.
This cave's mouth is the entrance to Janus' Cuban complex proper.
Watch out for Drone Gun 5 of 7 in the mist here.
A winding ramp leads up to this chamber with two Jungle Commandos and a ladder.
Climbing the ladder is a more direct route, but for this tour we'll go through the narrow passage on the right. The guards here like to pull Grenades so be ready to back up if needed.
These three Jungle Commandos take cover behind metal crates. Remember that your AR33 or RC-P90 can penetrate the crates.
This ramp leads up to Jungle's final battle arena.
There are five Jungle Commandos taking cover behind crates just past the fog. Any time one dies another comes to replace him. We won't tackle them just yet because we have two objectives to complete.
Check to your left for Drone Gun 6 of 7.
Now keep going to the left to find Drone Gun 7 of 7. Load into it and complete Objective A.
Destroy these nearby brown ammo crates to complete Objective C.
▶ TIP: The Grenade Launcher Xenia dropped is useful for doing this quickly.
Turning our attention back in the other direction, the RC-P90 is great for clearing out the crate guards. Keep pushing forward because these guards won't stop respawning.
Once you get to this hall the respawns will stop. Just kill the Jungle Commando behind the silver crate and you're home free.
Finally, run into the elevator to complete the level.
